Working with MSF : Nurses / Nurse Practitioners

Responsibilities :

Most nursing work in the field with MSF relates to the provision of basic healthcare. This means helping to set up health posts or health centres and running programs such as vaccination campaigns and mother-child healthcare. Nurses often work in feeding centres, where they take charge of the nutritional and medical care of children. This may be in a refugee camp, where MSF has set up its own healthcare service, or as part of an existing healthcare program. National staff usually implement programs while international nurses coordinate, supervise, train, manage resources and personnel, and set policy. Nurses only administer hands-on medical care in acute crisis situations requiring triage and surgery.

Essential Requirements :

  • Full and current registration/license with relevant national and professional body
  • Minimum two years post-qualification work experience
  • Available to work six to 12 months

Desirable:

  • Post-graduate specialties in one or more of the following: public health, nutrition, infectious diseases, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency room, operating theatre and HIV/AIDS.
  • Course in tropical nursing or one to two years relevant work experience (including First Nations or remote nursing stations)
