Research Assistant (volunteer opportunity)

Title:  Research Assistant

Department:  Program Unit

Reports to:  Program Unit Advisor (PUA)

Position status:  3 to 6 months / part time, 15 hours per week (flexible, to be discussed)

Location:  Montreal office with possibility to work from home or other location

 

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

 The research assistant will support the Program Unit Advisor (PUA) in some of his responsibilities in regards to the Middle Income Country Review, the review of electronic health research in North America, and other up-coming topics.  Applications from undergraduate/graduate students working on topics directly related to MSF research projects are welcome.

 

 KEY PROJECTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

 1.    Middle Income Country Review:

The research assistant will work closely with the PUA in supporting the participate in the completion of an Operational Review of identified Middle Income Countries

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing existing MSF information on the subject
  • Supporting a literature review of the subject
  • Supporting the PUA on the interview, note-taking, and summary of interviews
  • Supporting the writing and editing of the final report and publication

 2.       Review of Information Technology Tools  applied to medical practices:

The research assistant will work on specific tasks to support a review of existing and emerging Information Technology Tools that can be applied to MSF’s field medical (and non-medical) practices

Responsibilities will include:

  • Mapping  the existing resources within Canadian the healthcare systems
  • Researching tools developed by private companies or institutions
  • Examining the academic capacity for technology development in Canada for the development of  technology tools to be used for MSF field practices
  • Identifying potential partnerships with the academic institutions, research centers, and private
  • companies who are willing and able to develop free products for use by MSF

 3.    Support to Medical Care Under Fire

  • Development of literature on securitization of medical infrastructure.
  • Support on background paper

 4.    Other advocacy/research dossiers assigned, pending time/availability

 

*Note that these projects can change according to needs and the qualification of volunteer.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS

 Education and Experience

  • University Degree in medical field, humanitarian management, international relations, or equivalent professional work experience in research or within int’l organizations.
  • Experience in conducting and compiling research
  • Interest and Commitment to MSF humanitarian principles.
  • International Field experience and MSF experience is an asset but not necessary

 Skills and Competencies

  • Good research, communication, and analytical skills to effectively report on medical aid and advocacy issues and humanitarian crisis situations
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)
  • Organized, efficient, and process-oriented
  • Fluency in English essential and French very desirable
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship management, networking, collaboration and time management skills
  • Computer literacy with MS Office tools and other technologies related to research (internet, databases).
