Canadian Society for International Health - Operates a database of international health expertise for those wanting work overseas and for potential employers. Includes registry for professionals seeking employment and volunteer opportunities in health and development. Lists international internships in health related fields.

Global Citizens for Change - Contains a list of Canada's major, independent voluntary sending agencies (VSA) which organize work placements for volunteers in developing countries.

International Medical Volunteers Association - The International Medical Volunteers Association (IMVA) is a non-profit organisation that promotes, facilitates, and supports voluntary medical activity. Provides information about volunteer opportunities and offers practical advice on how to find compatible assignments.

American Medical Student Association - Good links in global and public health. This site maintains an excellent directory of overseas medical student fellowships, electives, and volunteer opportunities. Although it is intended for US students, many of these opportunities are also available to Canadians.

Work the World organize elective placements and projects overseas for medical students, nurses, midwives, dentists and physiotherapists. They work with you to design a placement that matches your interests.

Student University Network for Social and International Health (SUNSIH) - An organisation promoting international health and development, social issues, and exchange of information between university student in Canada and abroad. SUNSIH provides a list and links to international health programs at Canadian universities.

American Medical Student Association - Good links in global and public health. International Medical Volunteers Association - the IMVA is a non-profit organisation that promotes, facilitates, and supports voluntary medical activity.

Overseas Electives

The International Workbook Guide for Students and Residents - A project by the Ottawa Student Health Initiative and the Centre for International Health and Development at the University of Ottawa. This excellent workbook helps you plan and prepare for international projects and electives. Topics include general info on preparing for your international elective, fundraising your trip, preparing for culture shock and expectations in developing countries. World Health Organisation (WHO) - This site provides extensive information, data and links on international public health issues. The site also provides information on WHO projects and stories that examine the relationship between humanitarian and health care issues. Contains extensive disease specific information.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - The IFRC is the world's largest humanitarian organisation. International Federation's activities include: promoting humanitarian principles and values; disaster response; disaster preparedness; and health and care in the community.

International Committee of the Red Cross - Directs and co-ordinates international reliefs activities as well as promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

United Nations High Commision for Refugees (UNHCR) - The UN agency charged with protecting refugees and resolving refugee-related issues worldwide.
