Tweeting Haiti: Understanding Issues in Real-Time
If you can't make it to the Social Media Week - Toronto live panel discussion at the Centre for Social Innovation, join us on Wednesday 03 February 2010 (3:00pm-5:00pm ET) for a live-blogging event here:
About
As the world tried to understand and help Haiti in the aftermath of its 7.0 earthquake, social media became a tool of mobilization and misinformation. A plane of medical supplies diverted from Port-au-Prince was allowed to land after the US Air Force was inundated by complaints via Twitter. Yet retweets of a hoax that American Airlines had offered to fly doctors down to Haiti for free took days to be discounted. How can we, from NGOs to people concerned, navigate such a fast-moving stream of information?
