Haiti: In memoriam
Two weeks ago today a devastating earthquake hit Haiti. Since then, Haitians – our colleagues and their families among them – have been coping with the aftermath of one of the most overwhelming natural disasters in recent years.
The response of our staff in Haiti to the emergency has been outstanding. Our teams provided medical care just minutes after the earthquake. They are now winding down from the acute emergency phase, working non-stop, day and night. Thousands of people who have lost everything have received treatment and support, but now real effort is needed to ensure that people with untreated wounds, complications and trauma receive appropriate and adequate care.
Some of our colleagues helped dig out members of our team who were trapped under rubble following the quake. But other colleagues and members of their families did not survive. It is in their memory that we continue our humanitarian work.
