Philippines: Flood victims brace for next typhoon

NEWS | 02 October 2009

It has started raining again in the Philippines as another typhoon is forecast for this weekend. Tropical storm Ketsana, which hit the country with force last Saturday, caused major flooding in and around the capital Manila, displacing 140,000 people including 70,000 who are now staying in evacuation centres. Many areas are still under water in the flood-affected areas of eastern Manila and the province of Rizal, east of the capital.

MSF’s emergency teams have been conducting assessments by helicopter and are providing medical and non-medical support to victims of the floods at evacuation centres. Teams are concentrating their efforts on areas that have been hit hardest by rising waters, the slums and poorest areas of the city.

The communities affected are bracing themselves for the risk of further floods.

And as MSF’s emergency coordinator in Manila Oifa Bouriachi explains, communities living near coastal areas and by rivers are already being evacuated.
