DR Congo: MSF colleague disappears in Goma plane crash
Our colleague and friend Gigi Baguma, 45, was aboard the plane that crashed in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday 15 April 2008.
Despite 48 hours of intensive search in Goma hospitals, we are still without news of Gigi. His family has accepted that Gigi was among the victims of the crash.
Originally from Bukavu, in the East of the DRC, Gigi started working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in July 1998 to offer assistance to displaced people in Bas-Congo. He worked in a variety of positions before joining the logistics department in Kinshasa. Gigi was an engineer of great versatility and had become our radio, telecommunications and electricity expert.
The colleagues and friends who mourn Gigi today will never forget his composure under difficult circumstances, his perpetual smile, and of course his famous overalls.
The brutal loss of Gigi has left all of MSF deeply saddened. Our most sincere thoughts today are with the family and friends of our beloved colleague, and to all of the victims of this tragic accident.
