Somalia : MSF workers kidnapped

NEWS | 26 December 2007

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) confirms that two of its staff members were taken by force this morning in Bossaso, Somalia. Mercedes García, a Spanish doctor, and Pilar Bauza, an Argentinean nurse, were kidnapped on their way to an MSF feeding centre near camps for internally displaced persons and refugees in Bossaso.

We have received much information from different sources since the event. As this infromation is not yet confirmed, no further comment will be made on the situation. Further details will be provided once the organization has confirmed information.

For the moment, all security measures have been taken and the MSF team has been partly evacuated.

The MSF project in Bossaso started in May 2007. There are 8 foreign and 100 national staff working in the project. MSF has been working in Somalia since 1992.
