Less than a year ago more than 4300 families lived in the displaced persons camps set up around the village of Dubie in Katanga, a province in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They fled from their villages because of the violence carried out by the Mai Mai and the government’s army. They found medical assistance, food and safety in the camps. Now that the violence has ended, the camps are slowly but surely emptying out. Today some 70 families remain and even they plan to return home. The medical needs remain enormous and people have not yet recovered from their trauma. In fact, just the opposite is true.
