Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) says a new combination of drugs created to treat extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) is having a significant impact on a group of patients who are in the midst of a two-year treatment to cure their disease.

Outmoded policies and practices and critical gaps in care for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) are fuelling a worldwide public health crisis, said Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in a new report, Out of Step, released today at the 45th Union World Conference on Lung Health.

Aliaa Tayea is an epidemiologist with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). She recently returned home to Mississauga, Ont., from Uzbekistan, where she spent the last 21 months working as part of a tuberculosis (TB) program. The experience gave her a new perspective on the challenges faced by TB patients, in particular those undergoing the difficult treatment for drug-resistant forms of the illness.

Although tuberculosis (TB) is preventable and curable, it is the second-biggest infectious disease killer behind HIV, and claims nearly 1.3 million lives each year.

The spread of drug-resistant strains of the disease is increasingly recognized as a public health emergency. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is an umbrella term that refers to tuberculosis strains which resist the drugs routinely used to treat conventional TB.
