Over the last week, the city of Bangassou in Central African Republic CAR has being covered by fear and conflict after an intense fighting broke out between the UN forces and an armed group. On Tuesday 15, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) called all parties to agree to a ceasefire to allow for the deployment of urgent medical aid. This is the testimony of MSF physician Dr. Rene Colgo who currently head of mission in Bangassou city.

On Monday May 8, intense fighting broke out between one armed group and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in Yongofongo centre. Over the weekend, another attack took place when the same armed group entered the UN force base.

Emergency trauma surgery is the beginning rather than the end of a long journey to recovery for those injured in Mosul, major city in northern Iraq. As such, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is running a 40-bed hospital in Hamdaniya, a town south of Mosul, to cater for the needs of those recovering from surgery and attempting to rebuild their lives. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been one of the few agencies providing aid and medical care to people affected by the conflict. Crystal van Leeuwen, a Canadian nurse and member of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières’s (MSF) emergency team, is back from seven months coordinating MSF’s medical activities in Yemen. Van Leeuwen has worked with MSF in countries including Syria, South Sudan, DRC and Nigeria, as well as on Ebola response in West Africa. Al Zahraa hospital has this week been the latest hospital to be damaged by an airstrike in besieged east Aleppo, where 250,000 people are now trapped in an increasingly unsustainable situation. The medical facility was hit during the bombing on Tuesday evening and had to stop activities after doors, windows and an electricity generator were destroyed. Fortunately, there were no human losses.

Michael Talotti is a Canadian project coordinator from Bowmanville, Ontario, who currently oversees the MSF surgical project for war-wounded patients. He and his colleagues in Ramtha — including 137 national Jordanian staff and 12 international staff members — work in a section of a hospital operated by the Jordan ministry of health, where they provide emergency trauma surgery, as well as physiotherapy and mental health support, for war-wounded Syrians. Their patients include men, women and children who have been unable to escape the violence of the Syrian conflict.
