September 11, 2015

September 10 saw the immediate closure of the Captain Elias camp on Kos island, a makeshift building where authorities have been directing refugees to stay while awaiting their registration papers. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), who used the building for medical consultations, is expressing serious concern that there is now no provision of accommodation of any sort for new arrivals, despite repeated calls by MSF to authorities to provide adequate reception facilities on the island.

A Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) mobile medical team operating in the Idomeni area on the border between Macedonia and Greece today received ten people with wounds from stun grenades fired by Macedonian border troops.

A decision by the Greek authorities to detain migrants indefinitely, until either they are forcibly returned or they consent to voluntary return, is yet more evidence of Greece choosing ever harsher treatment for migrants, said Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) today. This decision, based on a recent opinion of the Legal Council of the Greek State, further worsens the already desperate situation of thousands of migrants in Greece.

With Greece currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) calls on the Greek government and the EU to stop turning a blind eye to these unacceptable practices in view of their serious medical and humanitarian consequences.
