The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) announced today that it has resumed search, rescue and medical-aid operations in the central Mediterranean Sea between Africa and Europe, and has already conducted its first operation of 2016.

On Wednesday, July 15, the Bourbon Argos — a search-and-rescue vessel operated by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the Mediterranean Sea — rescued 678 people from six different migrant boats and received one more patient transferred for medical reasons from an Italian Coast Guards vessel.

Last Sunday, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team provided emergency psychological support at the port of Augusta in Sicily, Italy, to 18 out of 454 migrants who had been rescued at sea trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya over the weekend.

Last weekend, more than 6,000 people were rescued in several operations on the Mediterranean Sea while making the treacherous crossing from Libya to Europe. Three hundred and sixty nine of those were rescued by the MY Phoenix, a search-and-rescue vessel run in partnership by Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and MOAS (Migrant Offshore Aid Station). Early Monday morning, an additional 104 people were rescued with the assistance of the MY Phoenix team and transferred onto a commercial vessel.
