A decision by the Greek authorities to detain migrants indefinitely, until either they are forcibly returned or they consent to voluntary return, is yet more evidence of Greece choosing ever harsher treatment for migrants, said Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) today. This decision, based on a recent opinion of the Legal Council of the Greek State, further worsens the already desperate situation of thousands of migrants in Greece.

The prolonged and systematic detention of migrants and asylum seekers in Greece is having devastating consequences on their health and human dignity. With Greece currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) calls on the Greek government and the EU to stop turning a blind eye to these unacceptable practices in view of their serious medical and humanitarian consequences.
