As the fighting intensifies in and around Mosul, the humanitarian crisis in Iraq continues to worsen. As part of its response to the widespread medical needs, MSF has established one field hospital with surgical capacity about 30 km north of the city and is setting up another in Qayyarah, some 60 km to the south.

Rafah Ali and Basil Abdullah are a married couple from Mississauga, Ontario, who each recently resigned from their respective medical jobs in Canada in order to work overseas with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The pair had decided it was time to recommit themselves to a common goal of giving back.

Since January 2014, 3.3 million Iraqis have been displaced as a result of widening conflict in the country. The humanitarian response in camps within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been strong — however as military operations continue in the north of the country, new waves of displacement are exacerbating an already inadequate and uneven response.
