Thanks to their quick decision-making and an overwhelming response from customers, Jenny Bird raised thousands for MSF’s lifesaving work.

An urgent scale-up of aid is needed in the northern district of Abs, the area worst affected by Yemen’s cholera outbreak, according to international medical organization Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The disease is spread by contaminated water, so water and sanitation activities are particularly vital to tackle the problem at source, says MSF.

The Government of Canada will give a group commendation to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Canada and present the Governor General Meritorious Service Cross Award to the International President of MSF, Canadian physician Joanne Liu, in recognition of the medical humanitarian organization’s extraordinary efforts during the Ebola crisis in West Africa. The award ceremony will take place in Ottawa on June 23, 2017.

Part of the reason the Refugee Convention was drafted was in response to the extreme suffering to which people fleeing violence and persecution are often exposed. In order to protect refugees, the convention sought to establish their rights and to outline the obligations that states have to protect them. But in 2017, while the global legal consensus on the rights of refugees remains intact, the humanitarian spirit that led to the convention appears to be in short supply.

By hosting a soccer tournament at her local athletic club, Karina brought her community together and in doing so developed a better understanding of the difference she was making at both home and abroad.
