After 14 years of presence in Pakistan’s Kurram district, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is withdrawing from the area. The authorities have refused to issue a No Objection Certificate (NoC) without providing any explanation. Without a valid NoC, MSF cannot continue medical activities in Kurram Agency.

An earthquake variously recorded at between 7.6 and 8.1 on the Richter scale rocked parts of northeastern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan on the afternoon of October 26. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical projects in north -western Pakistan were faced with an initial influx of seriously wounded in the first hours. After treating the injured, the next priority is to assess the needs and identify if there are any urgent follow-up requirements.

“Eyes without a face.” It’s the first thing I thought when I looked at her. I was working as nurse with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in a town known as Kuchlak. We were in a region near the western border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and surprisingly running through my mind was a Billy Idol song. Sometimes a challenge in itself is making sense of what we see.

There are many obstacles that prevent women in developing countries and elsewhere from getting the healthcare they need, and Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) works around the world to deliver medical services that many women might not otherwise have access to. Much of this work involves maternal care: Last year, MSF teams assisted in nearly 200,000 deliveries worldwide.

Tens of thousands of people fleeing major military operations in the Pakistani region of North Waziristan have crossed the border into Afghanistan over the past months, seeking refuge in Khost, Paktia and Paktika provinces.
