Since the start of the conflict in South Sudan, mid December 2013, more than 1,400,000 people have been internally displaced and more than 450,000 have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries, including 190,000 in Gambella region, western Ethiopia.

A vaccine against cholera is being used on a large scale for the first time in Ethiopia by teams from Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The mass immunization campaign will protect South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, as well as the host community, against the risk of cholera spreading across the border from neighbouring South Sudan, where an epidemic had been declared in June

An estimated 100,000 South Sudanese refugees have arrived in Ethiopia’s Gambella region since last December, when an outbreak of violence began driving many from their homes. Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has been providing assistance in four different locations along the border.
